Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is one of the most complicated, as well as misunderstood, conditions treated by mental health professions.  Seen below, are some "fast facts" concerning its prevalance, co-occurring disorders, and etiology.

ETIOLOGY

  • 2.5% (7.5 million) of the general population (1:40)
  • 4th most common psychiatric disorder
  • Male to Female is equal
  • Age onset for Males=13-15 years
  • Age onset for Females=20-24 years
  • Rarely developes after the age of 35 Unless due to trauma
  • Above average IQ
  • Onset is typically gradual
  • Average delay of 7-10 years from symptom onset to treatment
  • Typically serious marital disruption; 25 % of men never marry

  • Depression
  • Tics/Tourette's Syndrome
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
  • Trichotillomania
